PSOne screen color issue

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

PSOne screen color issue

Post by Venom »

I've got my SNES mini hooked up successfully to my screen, and there is solid video. However, there is this "band" at the top that flashes in and out (it's black, and it's kind of big) and it also has an effect on the colors on the top portion of the screen. Other times, the color only is affected.

I have checked my connections and made sure the ribbon cable was secure, otherwise I'm out of ideas.

Also, it only occurs on certain games. Super Mario World and Stunt Race FX are affected horribly but The Lost Vikings 1 & 2 have absolutely no problems. The screen is affected strangely by some games, but not others. The same thing also happens on two different SNES minis.

Measure the voltages you are giving your LCD and also the SNES. The LCD is ideally 7.5v while the SNES needs 5v and is pretty picky.

The screen is getting around 7.51V and the SNES 4.9V.

I probably should mention that prior to taking the screen apart I received a used PSOne along with it. When I first tried it ghostly green trails lingered off everything (when it was normally connected the the PSOne.) Well I tried it again later and saw something similar to the color change. I didn't think much of it then but now it comes to mind. I'm guessing the screen had been having that problem before I even got it. I still hope there's something I can do though.

Thanks!

EDIT: I resolved my problem. It WAS the SNES. I had a third one up in a shelf missing some parts that I just replaced with the one giving me video problems. Wola, my problem is solved! Nothing was wrong with the screen at all. Now I have a spare one!

I apologize for the double post. I bought a Zenith screen (one for PS2 and X-box) and get this - I was having the exact same problem! So I swapped my other LCD (from my PSone screen) and again the same problem. I am definitely concluding that it's a problem with the SNES. So I guess both of my screens are good.

I bought parts for the RGB mod and am going to try that and see what happens. Otherwise I just might have to buy a new SNES.
