Several PS2 portable questions :)

Post by superpapa »

Don't shoot me down, but I want to build a PS2 portable as my first project. I have been searching around the forums gathering information, and bookmarking special threads and sites. But there are a bunch of questions I have about it...

1. Can the PS1 screen connect to a TV? It'll be awesome if I could connect the portable to a TV. If it can't, is there any way I could do this? Any screens I could buy instead?

2. Are there any tutorials/diagrams or anything how I would implement a controller into the portable. For example... where to cut. Please don't say "Yes." Could you tell show me where it is? (if there is one of course)

3. Is there any way to slim down the PS2 motherboard? If not, it's ok. I'm just curious.

4. Is a ZN-40 case appropriate? If not are there any other cases available? (I don't really wanna frankencase or vacuum case)

If anybody can answer 1 or more of these questions, I'd be very grateful. And I have my heart set on making this, so discouragement won't work... Because I'm stupid and I'm willing to spend a lot of money

I respect your determination, superpapa. Sounds like you know the attitude of these forums pretty well. :)

1. I personally think the easiest and best solution for outputting video to a TV or whatever would be to just leave the PS2's current A/V port connected. You can wire up the screen from the motherboard while leaving the port connected and if you wire a seperate power switch to the potable's screen, it's possible to keep it off while hooked up to a TV. And you could just use the regular PS2 A/V cable into the TV.

2. I'm on my phone, so I can't give you any direct links for splitting a controller right now, but search through the stickies if you haven't or look how others have hooked up the controls for other systems (especially the dualshock for the PSOne) to get a pretty good idea where to cut.

3. There's really no way to trim it down. It's a multi-layer PCB so even if it looks like there's a spot you could cut off, there's probably traces inside that you'd cut. :/

4. I'm not really an expert on any of the ZN cases but if the mobo did fit dimensions wise, you'd still have to make some heavy modifications to the case for DVD access and to accommodate a hefty sized battery.

Hope that helps for now. Good luck!

Thanks, you were a giant help :)

But I couldn't find any thing about ps2 controllers in the stickies, there are only 5 and they are :
Gamecube video mods+GC info
Breakthrough in gamecube portablizing
Benheck Weekend
Complete List of Portables
PS2 RGB...If you've done it please come here!

:(
I've shifted through 6-7 pages here reading everything ps2 related, but nothing about controllers. Oh well.... if anybody knows of such a page... feel free to post it here lol.....

I'll post pictures of the project in a week...

you should check out Bacteria's page tutorial page for building his intoplay psone portable. it may give you some insight about controller wiring, since ps1 and ps2 are practically the same in terms of controllers

Edit: Never mind... disregard this post. Found it:

...Although there still aren't any directions... and I've seen the diagrams, and the ps2 dualshock controllers and the ps1 controllers (non dualshock) are different. :( But I've gotten the general gist of cutting it up... and help on many other questions I didn't post, thanks for posting it :)
