I think $400 is a bit much. However, I would pay maybe $600 total, MAYBE for that portable. Seems like a lot for a portable compared to what I've seen. Do you have a build log for that portable and what the hell items where you using on that budget?

How the blazes did you spend $750 on parts? You could do a 360 laptop on that kind of a budget...

Did you have a buyer before you started? If so, did you give him an idea of what the cost would be?

That's exactly what we were thinking...

$150 for parts without the high-end case isn't terrible, but there were a few components that can be found a good deal cheaper. The Genesis, for example - used video game stores routinely price them at $30 with controller and hookups. I've seen them as low as $20 as well, and I bought 3 at a thrift store for $4 apiece (with nothing included, of course). Also, $15 for a SNES controller is high, too.

If he'll pay you $400, charge him that. If you are willing to make it for a price the market is willing to pay, that's the "right" price for it.

One other question - I didn't realize you used a 5" (PSone) screen. Using the cartridge for scale, it appears your handheld is nearly a foot wide - is this true? Nothing wrong with that; in fact, it's a beautiful piece of modding - I just wasn't aware of the approximate size.

but in the end they pay the same amount. Plus, $400 in labor is crazy, the buyer must be a maniacal genius to pay that!
