Good *FREE* picture edting program?

I'm sick of paint!

The damn program compresses the pics too much too see detail at all. The only way I can get a decent pic is by leaving the picture huge (or saving as a bmp, but thats not an option

)

So, any good free programs, or even cheap programs to reccomend?

Its a picture editing program, but Im sure it would be better than paint.

Running Mac OS - Graphicconverter.

Windows- GIMP.

I guess I'll have to.

At school, I installed Photoshop 7 on several machines, and the teachers uninstalled it for some reason. So I'm running it off a 10g external USB drive instead! Just need to put in the CD key for every machine...

Same deal with Flash.

bicostp: That is because the school doesn't want to get busted. If the Feds come in and find pirated software (and crazily enough, I hear they check schools often) the school can be in huge trouble. It's not very good for a school that likely has gov't funded computers to be breaking the law with said computers

Odd, because most of the machines are donated surplus corprate PCs, and they all have Win98 installed from the same CD...

And they uninstalled GIMP and OpenOffice, too.

If they were corporate computers, they probably had a liscence to use the same CD. Are you sure that teachers are deleting the stuff, or do the computers have auto-restore?

There was a problem with kids deleting stuff, but I set them as "users" and myself and the staff as "Administrators" (on XP and 2000, anyways). I also installed surveilence software on a couple machines, to catch them red-handed.
