Oh, and as far as using a wii goes, you'll be hard pressed to find one cheap, although if you really think the thickness is worth it(as in $200 more worth it) Go for it!

A wii with a broken reset button or a broken controller sync button, or one missing the front disc plate, goes for about $110 shipped on ebay.

Totally worth it, IMO.

Portable Wii that autoboots an ISO Loader on the SD Card which reads ISO's from a Hard Drive that is modded into where the DVD Drive was would be great.

My Wii is all of that except Portable and the Hard Drive is external

And this wouldn't have to be JUST a GCN either, right? You build in the gamecube controller to the case but you're still able to load Wii games? Sounds like a damn good project. Use it as a gamecube/Wii-game-that-uses-GCN-controller player out-and-about, and plug it in at home and use it as a wii.

How quickly could you get into games? If ISOs, homebrew and Nintendo channels/Wiiware (like Mega Man 9, etc.) can be gotten to quickly, that'd make a portable Wii pretty neat.

Nope, it can't stream GC games, GC uses mIOS when it loads, which locks out the Wii's hardware, including the USB ports. I think some hackers are working on a custom mIOS at the moment.

Also, even though you don't need the DVD drive, you still need the drive board plugged in, otherwise the Wii errors on boot.

Check my Youtube channel for a couple of custom loader videos, I've got ones based on Apple's coverflow stuff in iTunes.

This kind of kills things, at the moment anyways. A flat Mii can emulate a drive from what I've heard, and having that would still be smaller than with the DVD drive in it.

I have a flatmii, it needs a computer to emulate the drive, sadly. Otherwise, it would be absolutely perfect.

The good thing is that it should be easy to make a custom wii firmware that loads channels using a GC controller. Even if we just use the wii for a WiiP with discs, the slot loading drive is way smaller than the uber-thick GC drive.
