PSOne / Zenith screen - on screen display?

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

PSOne / Zenith screen - on screen display?

Post by MegatronUK »

Am i right in thinking that all of these screens should show a display when either the brightness or volume controls are being adjusted?

I've successfully modded my screen with 6 leds (two sets of 3 x 3mm 8000mcd; 3 along the top and 3 along the bottom, with each circuit running from 5v with a 100ohm resistor) and have it displaying RGB+Composite sync from a FPGA device (Minimig v1.1) - the picture is very good; although a little dark until I removed the anti glare filter (I didn't have to apply 5v to pin 12 to display anything; it just worked).

What I can't understand though, is whether the buttons are actually supposed to do anything? They don't appear on-screen and the brightness one doesn't actually appear to do anything (though I'm not sure whether it's supposed to when you're actually using the screen in RGB mode), speakers aren't hooked up yet, so I can't test whether it actually alters volume; it certainly doesn't appear on-screen.

Try connecting the +5v to pin 12 and see if it works then.

Yep, the osd does appear to need +5v on pin 12. Brightness control does now adjust (slightly), still need to hook the speakers up.

The brightness adjustments on the psone screen only adjusts the brightness of the CCFL backlight. Adjusting the brightness on an led modded screen should not do anything. The "sub" brightness (the amount of light being let through the lcd) of the lcd pannel is pre-set.

oh right, sorry about that :? , some one told me this years back when i wanted to do an led mod on my first portable's psone screen. I get it now the brightness must control the ccfl backlight and the LCD at the same time.
