Which are the best sites to build a project blog site with?

Post by bacteria »

Which sites allow you to set up a (preferably free) quality blog site, that allows you to move between pages (ie project names, not by dates), add YouTube videos, offer downloadable PDF files, pictures, link to other sections by hyperlinking (on text or pics)? I don't want ones that define sections by calendar or dates, etc.

Which sites do you recommend?
Professional layout but easy to update and use?
Links?
Why do you think they are the best ones??

:D

Blogger or Wordpress. I dunno bout the PDF part on both of them though, and you can create links to seperate posts if you'd like to. I honestly would make a blog for such a thing though. If it helps wordpress is the same thing that Ben uses.

Look out for when they have deals

I got hosting there for a year unlimited with a free domain for 11 bucks. It has one click install for lots of things like wordpress, its a great host.

Wordpress looks very nice, but needs a web host - I currently have one, but frankly, agree with palmertech that a blog site is probably best for what I want to do. I signed up for the free blog facility on Google, no hosting needed, all free. Looks nice. I will need to keep it simple, no WIP guides, but can embed video (great), comments for people to post (nice), link to external links (eg PDF), etc. Only niggle is that it insists on dating everything, so you can't just have the topic titles and links - small compromise though! :D

Being free, I can of course dispense with the old site in the coming months and make a new one, ready for my next launch...

Thanks for the advice guys.

AVOID x10hosting.

My site disappeared into thin air after writing hours worth in it.

Using Google for their blog. Got it set up.

Have a look - think it looks neat: http://bacteria-modder.blogspot.com/ - only test stage at moment, so little there. Will use it for completed projects mainly.

Early days yet, only put a couple of bits on there to see how it looked, that is all. Needs a fair bit of time to do it properly.

BTW - registered on the TG-16/PCE forum at http://www.pcenginefx.com - they seem a friendly bunch, going to continue my WIP for the TG-16/PCE compatible system I am making there, as there is no-where relevant here to post it ( ); (no, i'm not trying to make a point BTW, just stating a fact) and in preference to my own site, which will be completely revamped and closed in preference to the new site in due course anyway. Will change my sig logo link for the new project in next days to reflect change.

No it doesn't.

http://www.wordpress.com

;)

EDIT: Of course, running the software on your own host gives you more control over templates and stuff like that. (It's the same software either way.)

Great, bicostp - will look into Wordpress. If that is better I will use that instead (as long as it doesn't need FTP'ing or HTML; I don't do either).

Is there any way to just keep project titles and not have the empty months and years showing - I know it is a blog site but i'm not using it in the normal day-to-day blogging - just when projects need posting - just via links are nice. I can't do that in Google blog, can you in Wordpress? Is Wordpress easy to use and hassle-free?

Don't you already have a webhost with your site on it? It's always better to have it hosted on your own site.

Edit your template to hide the months collum. Then just manuall update your own custom collumn.

XCVG - Yes, I do, cost me £70 a year for a .com and site; it would be nice to just have a free method instead, however, if there are benefits to keeping a domain then I will.

Dark-Aries - Can't do that in the Google option; it forces years and months showing, or nothing at all - which is the only negative about the Google option for me (although it is free). Wordpress hopefully offers better than that, worth a try!

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.
