psp replacement nub + ps2 controller?

Post by neverused »

I have three psp replacement nubs from dealextreme, one extra just in case, and I am trying to figure out how to use one of those to replace the analog stick on a ps2 controller. Is this possible? I found this guide on engadgetand tried doing the exact same thing, just backwards, but when I did, it didn't work and one of the connections got really hot, so I stopped that right away. Can anyone help me with this? I plan to use the psp nubs in a ps2 portable if possible, but if I can't hook them up, I can't use them. Thanks.

Check your pinouts. Make sure stuff isn't shorting.

I think you only need ABCD.

Ok, so I wired the psp nub first using only the A,B,C, & D labels and that did not work. I have since added the two red wires shown above, however I still have the same problem. Once everything is hooked up as in the picture, the only two directions that work correctly are left and down. I can move in any direction, however it does not register like the stick is being pushed all of the way. For up and right, the analog stick on registers a partial press no matter how far over I push the psp nub. On down and left however, it will register halfway over and all the way over. Any suggestions? thanks

I kinda wondered about this.
I don't think the PSP's analog nub will actually have the kind of resistance the PS2 joystick does.
In other words, even at it's "max", it only actually has the resistance of the PS2 joystick at, say, 1/4 of the way pushed.

What's wierd is that at the max for the psp nub, it seems to match the ps2 pot in the down and left directions, but about 1/2 or less in the up and right directions...

Woah, seriously?

Well then, I'd assume there's some other problem here.

I was wondering about this, have you removed the ps2 joysitck yet? Like you haven't removed it yet in case it didn't work. Having both joysticks attached can mess with the signal.

I left the pots in, both of them. I'll try removing them later, unless someone can come up with a new idea.

Nope, that'd make perfect sense.
I didn't even think of that, but yeah, the old pot in there could cause "problems".

My PSP Phat has a buggy analog, and it works on down and right, partially on up and left.

Ok, so last night I desoldered the pot entirely and wired up the psp nub like the photo above, however I did not include the "red" wires. I only hooked up the A, B, C, and D like XCVG suggested. However, now when I run a game, it just gets stuck in the down direction no matter what direction I press on the nub. Should I try a different nub or try hooking up those two red wires in the diagram? Thanks.
