Weird Disc Drive problem on PC

Hey I know this doesn't fit anywhere but you guys are really nice right

Anyways one day I was burning a disc in WinXP and for some reason it didn't work. Tried it a couple times and still didn't work (it said it completed but I couldn't read disc in other computers)
So now when I go to my computer it acts as if there is a disc in the disc drive. I try to eject uninstall driver and replace drive but it still acts as if nothing is wrong and it's waiting for me to burn something to my blank (ghost) disk.

Any suggestions?

That happened to me once with a DVD, but I burned it to a new one, it worked.

May just be old media, try with some newer stuff. Could also be that your burning or reading drive is on it's last legs.

Try booting into safe mode and removing the old hardware/drivers ect.

The thing is I took the bad Drive out and it still thinks it in there won't let me uninstall the hardware. I got a new drive in and it doesn't even notice!

At that point I'd double check the cables, and if they're good, I'd reinstall Windows if Hackmodford's suggestion doesn't pan out. Weird troubles like these tend to take more time to resolve than just wiping everything and starting over.
