How to remedy burned mouth?

Post by palmertech »

I made a baked potato in the microwave, let it sit for about 10 minutes. I picked it up, it felt fine. Took a small bite (Eating it as one would an apple) and it was fine. Took a large bite, took a chew, I end up spitting potato all over my laptop, as it turned out to be white-hot! Within minutes, I had these huge blisters on the roof of my mouth and gums.

Now a bunch of dead skin has come off, my mouth is bleeding, I have large patches of open sores, and it stings. A lot.

I have done a quick google search, it appears that the only advice out there is for chemical burns, and bleeding is not a symptom. I know how to deal with soldering iron burns, but I am lost on this. Does anybody have some advice for healing faster/stopping pain?

Drink something cold. It'll help the pain, at least, and it may help to slow any damage from the burns.

something like peroxide or mouthwash will probably stop the bleeding but will hurt a lot

I don't know what will help you, but the mouth heals really fast. That potato must have been pretty dam hot to do that much damage.

Microwave+potatos=bad, for future reference. Also, note to self: Contrary to what one may see Creed do on "The Office", potatos should never be eaten in the same manner as an apple. Always cut them to release the steam and some heat.

Triton, I did what you suggested. It is a prescription only canker sore rinse that is supposed to help them heal and kill bacteria. It hurts like the dickens, but only for a second; It has numbing agents! So my mouth feels fine right now, and the bleeding did stop. Really good suggestion, thanks.

lysterine is a godsend. Whenever I do something to my mouth I swish that stuff around. perhaps if nothing else, it'll kill the nerves. hydrogen peroxide is also good to use (We have an orajel thing but it turns out the active ingredient was just hydrogen peroxide) that's supposed to help the mouth heal.

You're going to want to be careful about what you eat for the next week or so. Stay away from citrus fruits especially - I've done that before.

Never burned myself bad enough to bleed, though. That's second-degree burns, if I correctly remember from my Boy Scout days.

A potato, huh? Reminds me of the Mythbusters jawbreaker-microwaving episode...

Doing pretty much anything Creed does is probably a bad idea, period.

DO NEED. I have multiple horrible canker sores at a time and would kill for a rinse. What's the name?!

There's not really anything you can do. Drink some cold water.

No! Microwave + potatoes = awesome! Just remember to poke a few holes in it with a toothpick first.

And you never eat microwaved potatoes like an apple. Cut them open and mash them up with a fork instead.

This reminds me of how I would microwave pizza pops in elementary school. They would come out super f***ing hot near the edges but barely lukewarm in the middle. Kinda the opposite, but I wanted to share.

microwaves work (IIRC) by exciting water molecules to heat the thing you are microwaving, and work from the outside in, so things would be hot on the outside and cool in the inside if not microwaved long enough, something like potatoes (high starch and moisture content) when microwaved for a long time will retain A LOT of internal heat for quite some time unless cut open to let the steam out. same kinda deal with plastic plates, they absorb the heat instead of partially reflecting it like a ceramic plate would. depending on the kind of plastic they can burn the crap out of you!

I believe the brand name is "Perio-Gaurd". It has some kind of super-anti-bacterial power, and it also contains chemicals that make the mouth more conducive to healing (Sometimes you will get it after gum surgery). The numbing effect only lasts for 20-30 minutes, but a very small, quick rinse will do it. I can't even imagine living through canker sores without it, diligent use gets rid of them in 2-3 days, for me at least. Awesome stuff. :D
