WARNING (56k)

Post by jjhammerstein »

Seriously, I haven't had a 56k modem since AOL cost MONEY.
Are there even any companies that still PROVIDE 56k dial-up?

NetZero. They have commercials telling you to switch from broadband to dialup to save money. I say screw that, and I'd rather not have internet than dialup. I could go to the library or a friend's house if I needed internet and wanted to save money.

Looks like their website hasn't been updated since AOL cost money either.

My cousin's still stuck with dial-up because his mom's paranoid about DSL for some reason. He used to be able to steal DSL from his neighbors, but they put a password lock on it, so he can't use his PS3 online any more. Well, unless he takes it to his friend's house, and I think he has a T1 line.

Oh, gee, I don't know, maybe so I don't have to wait three weeks to go to all of the websites I like?

Because I would rather take a plane to California then a bike. :P

We've got a local-ish company around us called PowerShift. I used to use it, but my girlfriend still has it.

They used to. We had it for a while. Basically, you sign up with an email address, and whenever you dial in you have to run their client software which stays on top of all other windows and shoves banner ads in your face. And, you're only allowed to connect for 10 hours a month.

Their "fast" dial-up is a joke. It seemed a little faster because it cached HTML page links before you clicked them, but it didn't do anything for anything else (images, downloads, etc.)

My grandmother was using it until last year. Now she just uses the free dialup that comes with our ATT DSL, since there's no ads or 10 hour limit.

56k=EPIC FAIL

Seriously, in theses days of massive user-posted images, YouTube, and gigabyte-plus downloads 56k is simply inadequate. In fact, DSL and cable internet will probably be inadequate soon. In the future, we will all have fibre-optic lines running into our homes!
