any way, if i were to use a multimeter, what would it say so I can differentiate between + and -

Try some wires, dun't work, try some others.

I'd start with the red wire, and whatever's in the middle.

I'm guessing this:
red=+
gray=gnd
orange=pulse output for RPM monitoring.

it could be using anything from 5-12 V. Considering the shape, it looks like it comes from either a laptop or console, in which case 5 V is a more likely bet. Hooking up 4-5 V should make it start moving at least. 3 AA batteries should do it.
