So does any 3rd party controller work with changing the joystick or are there only certain kinds?

(I plan to replace the n64 one with a ps2 joystick)

The vast majority work, but a few still use the opto-sensors (Or worse, a hall effect mechanism).

If it LOOKS like an official one, be careful, as they are a lot more likely to use the same kind of joystick. If it is clearly different, it is almost 100% certainly one that will work with a PS2 joystick.

Thanks palmertech, I just have one question, what's a hall-effect mechanism. Sounds terrible

In reality, it is extremely awesome. It experiances very little wear, and is very reliable and accurate, and it is almost impossible for it to become de-tuned. It basically uses magnetic field detection. The Dreamcast controller uses this method.

The main reason it is terrible to us is that hacking one is near impossible.

Try looking for a "Yobo" brand N64 controller, they have a lot of tolerance, are easy to solder to, and most importantly, are the most widely available/cheap controllers that will work. If you can get a random better deal, though, take it.

I dunno, my Yobo analog stick broke on me (looks fine, doesn't register side to side movements)
I tried to replace the stick with an xbox one but the same thing happened. I have no idea what is wrong (it worked before...) in short, they are pieces of crap.

I had that problem, too. I thought it was screwed, but I figured it out by poking at it with some wires and my multimeter, but I cannot for the life of me remember what it was I did...

I will check for you, if it is still in one piece.

And pieces of crap they may be, but rather a cheap piece of crap than an expensive piece of gold (At least for what we are doing).

Ya, now that you put it that way, they're okay... i still prefer the official ones, probably because the sticks are more accurate, although they do wear out easily.
Please post about how you fixed it because then perhaps i may use it again.

Regarding the original thread, the madcatz controller will work. At least i'm pretty sure it will (perhaps post a picture of the one you want to use, otherwise i cannot specifically recall.)

Yep, it has simpler tech... the joystick that it uses are much easier to work with.
There are ones with incredibly small boards, though- check the Darth 64 thread, that one is TINY

Yeah I've seen the hori minipad, $50 though, way to pricey for a controller.

I wasn't really recommending it (as i used to have one and they are really uncomfortable to use).
Your initial plan with the madcatz will work, although i am not sure about the size of the board (looks like it'll be pretty big to me).

Yeah I wanted the madcatz one because it had turbo and mario party button mashing games would have been hard on my portable. But the other one in this thread also has it. So great!!
