Rapid fire mod?

Includes but not limited to: SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Gear and I guess the Virtual Boy.

Rapid fire mod?

Post by thewise1 »

Is there a way to rapid fire mod the n64 controller. Not for cheating, I just don't want to be mashing my portable and possibly breaking the system every time I play mario party.

So is there a way to rapid fire mod the N64 controller?

Sure.
Same way you do a rapid fire mod for any other controller.

Find a source for a pulse!
On old 360 controllers, you'll find this off of the player 1 LED.
But on N64 controllers... I kind of doubt there'll be a source on the board.

But what you can do, just like many other rapid fire mods, is make a source.
A common and relatively easy way is with a 555 Timer IC, common and cheap.
More advanced systems (like many 360 rapidfire mods) use microcontrollers, usually cheap PIC or AVR ones.
The N64 controller has plenty of free space in it, luckily, so you have quite a range of options.

Well you could take the turbo mechanizm thing out of a turbo controller and put it in the mem card slot of a normal controller and run all of the wires through there.

I know theres a 555 timer mod out there.

and, I don't know if this last one would actually work but maybe you could get one of those xbox 360 rapid fire mod kits off of ebay and try and intall it in an n64 controller. If I remember correctley the three grips (handles) on the n64 controller are basically hollow except for screws, so you could probably put something in there.

GAH! Thanks for the help but I'm still a newbie at digital electronics. I don't think I could do that on my own. I just know how to solder. I just need to know where, and what.

Do I just take out the 5v and attach the other 2 leads to button and ground?

There's other parts there, you know.

But the diagram is as simple as is gets. There's the pinout, some parts, and pretty lines (dots are intersections)
Hey, sup?

Hook up the 5v to a source of 5v on the N64 controller.
Which there isn't one. There's a source of 3.3v though! And I think it'll work! (Won't be hard to find)
Then, well, yes, hook it up to whatever button you want.

Perfect, why didn't I think of that. But won't it suck up a couple volts from the 3.3 volt line?

Awesome, only one more question, will this be button activated or switch activated?

I'm not quite sure how I wire this along with a tactile switch.

Like the mouse button will go to the controller cpu, ground to ground, and I put a switch in between, does hat mean the rapid fire activates by pushing the switch or pushing the switch and the button?

You can rig it up either way you'd like.

Cool, but I actually sorta kinda maybe don't know how to rig it up so I hold the switch then push the button for it to work, I have an idea though, I'll post it in here as soon as I make it in paint.
