5"-7" screen with tiny bezel

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

5"-7" screen with tiny bezel

Post by jjhammerstein »

I'm in the market for an LCD for an N64p, so 4:3 would be nice.
I'm doing a horizontal PSP style layout, so i want as little casing as possible above and below the screen, for aesthetics reasons.
I also don't want to spend more that about $60, but that's flexible.

What are my options?

That took guts, whoever did that. Most I cut was the right side and the inverter at the top. The rest seemed like an unnecessary risk.
Hey, sup?

Heh heh, I did that. It was on a non-working board, though. But all I cut away was the grounding strips, so it should still work, in theory.

Multilayer board, there could be tons of "invisible" traces you cut :P
Or if you're lucky, it's only a 2 layer board (yea lol) and you're safe.
In which case, AWESOME.

techknott (Probably misspelled that, sorry) cut down his PSOne screen, I remember. if anybody ruined an LCD and thus has a spare board, they should try it.

PSOne screens are too expensive for me to go to extremes like that.

Well, actually.
I'd do it if someone convinced me that there were no hidden traces.

I wouldn't go THAT extreme, but I would feel safe cutting down the tops and bottoms to make it shorter.

I'M CONVINCED! :D

Okay, so that's an option.
What else?

Also, why are they so damn expensive?

A good bit of the bottom can be cut off, if you're comfortable soldering video, audio and power higher up to tiny spots. A bit off the right.

Problem is, the board is almost certainly 4 layer; leaving a millimeter or two is a good idea for traces you can see.

As far as the price, back in 2002, people were figuring out how to mod them into their computers. Since they weren't terribly easy to get a hold of then (as in now), the price rose very fast once people learned how to do it.

Aye. I think it can be done a bit higher, but not much; there is a post somewhere on the forums where somebody showed how much he was able to cut off, and still have it work- not quite as small as this one, of course, but it was close.

again, somebody with an extra board (because of a broken screen) should try this. Cut off more and more in small units
till it stops working

and take pictures between the steps, naturally.
