A PS2 Laptop

Post by rayne »

I saw a lot of the ben heck stuff a while back, and all the portables, then i saw his 360 laptop. So i did a little bit of looking, and i personally didnt like the look of the Ps2p, and it wouldnt have 2-players i dont think.(played gears of war 2 splitscreen on 7" dvd player, its tiny)

So i was going to try and make a ps2 laptop with one of the original Fat ps2's as i can get the adapter for the hardrive and all that, But i was wondering how difficult it was going to be, With things like the monitor. I wanted to put a either 14" or 17"(estimate) lcd screen on there, with the keyboard which would probably besoldered to a usb spot(yes no?) And it would all run on a li-ion battery for very long?

Maybe put a power switch going to the harddrive so it dosnt suck electricity when i dont need it. Wanted it for school during finals and such, and going camping with some buddies(thats where we use dvd player)

You're definitely going to want to invest in a slim PS2, or your laptop will be a foot thick.

Read the guides, look through the stickies, you have all the information available to you to make this.

Is it easy?

If you can use this information, and have a steady hand, sure, it's easy.

Well, i have a slim, and a few broken fat ps2's (dead lasers i cant be hassled to replace. if i waste broken ps2's, nothing to cry about)

I like the motorized cd bay on the fat, as i think it would be hard to make a fliptop(trying to think of plans still) and i was gonna try to take off the heatsinks and all that, make new copper ones.

I bet it you could put the motorized drive onto a fliptop.
It's gotta be possible.

Im just trying to keep it simple, it will be my first project. Need to practice my soldering andd all that.

Will have to see how it works, if i can slim the fat down enough i will end up using a slim, would be a little wierd though, the screen would be bigger than the ps2

Well, it's a laptop.
The screen is SUPPOSED to be bigger.
There needs to be room in the bottom case for the LCD control, batteries, power inverters, cooling, and all that other fun stuff.

Since you're not REALLY making a laptop, e.g. no keyboard, why not just make it into a tablet PS2?

That hasn't really been done yet, but I think it's a really good idea.

That is true. Although i did sorta want the keyboard for playin monster hunter online, and such. But a tablet dosnt seem like a bad idea. Only thing i dont like is having the screen out in the open. If its in school it can get vracked very easily. With the laptop style it folds and give a little protection to it.

Make a cover for the screen for when you're not using it.
Or, put a layer of clear plexiglass or something over it permanently, to make it super rugged.
You won't need a keyboard when you're camping, there's no internet in the woods. Leave it off, plug it in when you're at home.

A tablet would basically be a normal portable without a controller built in, so you could look at previous portables for help. With a tablet, you're probably going to want some sort of stand to prop it up. You could have a piece of sheet metal that covers the screen, and that could flip over the top and act as a stand. You'd want foam around the edges or something to keep the metal from rubbing the screen.

Meh.:/
PS2 has WAAY too many buttons to use a keyboard with comfortably, I think.
It's worse than N64.

Also, he wants it for playing multiplayer with friends, so he's going to be packing extra controllers anyway.

That doesnt sound like a bad idea at all. I think i may pull that off. I have some leather i could wrap around the sheetmetal, Or i like that plexiglass idea too, do both at the same time? It will give the stand, plexiglass wont get scratched, and protect it. I will use paint in a few minutes to show whats forming in my head.
