3.5" screen from DealExtreme

Hi everyone, I'm a long-time lurker first-time poster

I just received one of these babies, and I've got a couple of questions.

1. The power cable that comes with it ends not with a plug but with two wires, a red and a black. Now, do I need to cannibalise an old power plug, cut off the end and attach it onto this one? As well, it's 12V DC (apparently), would this explode if I put it in a wall socket in Australia?

2. The screen comes with three plugs that look like basic RCA female ends, but on closer inspection the red one is the male end of the power cable, while the yellow and white ones are normal lookin'. However, the screen doesn't have any speakers attached to it, so what's the white end for?

3. How much can I cut down the maximum voltage used by the backlight? I know (vaguely) about the LED mod, but how beneficial would it be?

you'll have to connect a PSU or batteries

About the red/white cables, I don't know. Maybe there is a headphone port or summin'?

3) the voltage you can cut down on the entire thing until it stops working. What you probably mean is amperage (current), which depends on the screens backlight power consumption. Generally, it's worth it. As for voltage, LEds generally run off 3.4 or 3.3

No speakers, in fact no audio amp at all.

Also no board for controlling color/contrast/brightness at all.
And I think the lowest it will take is 9v.

But you'd be better off trying to find something else. The screen looks awful and with no way to adjyust the settings it is worthless in a portable.

Well, it didn't come with any PSU so I don't know about that. If I hook up some batteries, it should work? If I have my electronics knowledge right, it'll need to take 9-12V to turn on, and then the current determines how long it will last running off that source?

Damn. I know it would be too good to be true. The good thing is that I'm pretty much attempting a portable as a learning experience, so the building process is what matters, not the end result. I'll probably brick the screen before I get too far, anyway

EDIT: Oop, found out why there are two RCA ports. Apparently it has dual video input and can swap between them at the push of what used to be a mystery button.
