VGA to Composite

So I bought the cable pictured below in hopes that it would allow me to play a Nintendo 64 and PS2 on a monitor, but it does not. Is this the proper cable and my monitor is acting up? Is this the wrong cable? And if it is, what cable should I use (if any)?

I don't think that's going to do it at all. There isn't anything on there to convert the composite or S-Video signal into all the signals that a VGA monitor requires.

You are going to need a composite-to-vga converter. A simple cable won't work.

Look to spend at least $50-$100.

That goes from VGA to composite, which is fairly easy because it involves simply combining signals. (As long as you have a video card that can work properly with it. The sync rates need to be in the monitor's capabilities to display.)

It's much, much harder to split video from composite to VGA. And it would still have the composite video artifacts, and would look horrible, so there's really no point in trying to use a monitor unless you do a complete RGB mod.

Actually, it doesn't combine signals at all. It just tells a compatible VGA card (likely via a couple of jumped pins) to output Composite and S-video on certain pins. Composite video is actually fairly involved, and to convert RGB of any sort to composite video requires encoding circuitry.

You need a converter box like the K-World TV Box.

couldn't he RGB mod the systems themselves to hook up through VGA?

On some systems that would work but on some it wouldn't.

Also the monitor might not except the 15Khz signal that some systems output.

TV would be cheapest unless you have a sweet 32" monitor you want to use (just an example). You could probably buy a tv bigger than your monitor for less than a converter.

I just have a 19" Widescreen Flat-Panel Monitor, and I was hoping to avoid having to buy a TV because I can't find one for cheap.

Define "cheap".
Check thrift stores and pawn shops. You can probably get a 20"+ CRT TV for under $50.

Because of space, I need to have a flat screen. Those are much, much more expensive.

You should have gotten an HDTV with computer inputs.
