looking into buying a laptop

Post by jumbika »

Hey folks, I'm looking into buying a laptop and I'd like to connect a mouse to it, and speakers. What ports should I make sure the laptop has before buying it so I can use a mouse and hook up speakers to it? What kind of ports does a laptop need to connect a mouse and speakers? I really need your help. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much in advance.

Most mice are USB nowadays, so it needs a USB port.
Most computer speakers use a standard headphone jack.

Any laptop from the last 7 years probably has these. An older laptop might have a PS/2-style mouse connector, so you'd need a mouse with the same.

There are adapters to connect USB mice to PS/2 ports and PS/2 mice to USB ports. They're pretty cheap, and easy to find. You'd have a hard time finding a laptop made in the past 7 years that you can't hook speakers and a mouse up to.

If you're willing to drop a lot on the laptop, there are few that may come with a surround sound style audio output, or even the laser audio port. Otherwise you're stuck with the standard head-phone jack, which should be able to push some small speakers decently.

I would advise against such things like USB headset/speakers. I use one and well when you start taxing the system the quality can go down, also if the USB plug come out, the computer throws a fit.... namely players stop working, or you have to restart them, Firefox you have to restart. So just not really a good idea.
