usb nes controller + emulator/games?

Post by dav3yb »

Would there be a way to turn an old NES controller into a usb controller with some small amount of flash memory or something on it that would allow you to run and play an emulator? seems like it would be nice to do that with some of the original controllers if possible, that way you can take those around and just plug em up and play.

I've never really done much in terms of ... i guess engineering anything like a handheld from a full console, but im wondering if anyone would know how difficult something like this would be, or if anyoens done it.

If you mean this:

He posted an explanation here. It requires some fine soldering work, but it's eminently doable. I'm planning on doing this to a few Genesis controllers I've picked up with knackered wires.

thats actually exactly what i'd like to do... i suck at soldering, although i might be better than i think due to me only using some really fat solder, so i've not used any thin stuff... anywho, thanks for the post.

This is easier than you think. I have done similar things, but in a bigger case, as my controller was a homemade arcade joystick, so there was room inside for everything. Doing it smaller is possible, especially if you go with one of RetroUSB's chips, which can save you a lot of space.
Emulation isn't accurate. There is no substitute for real hardware!
