Laptop Screen Replacement

My aunt likes to give me broken laptops for some reason. I long time ago, she gave me a Toshiba Satellite that she dropped on the screen. The screen had a big crack thing that looked like black ink splattered across the screen. It worked, but only the top left corner of the screen was usable.

Now she gives me a broken Compaq Presario. The motherboard failed for the second time, so she's getting a new laptop. (This one is actually my cousin's, her son's) The screen works great, and I took it out and put it in the Toshiba and it works almost perfectly.

The only problem is that since the new screen is widescreen, the image is smaller and all the way the left side of the screen. I can't change the settings under the display settings because the computer doesn't know that it's a widescreen monitor. How I can I use all the pixels?

Sorry.

The PC's GFX card is (I think) is flashed to think that the monitor is 4:3.

I don't know anything else.

Using registry tweaks you can just enter in a custom resolution, like 1280x800 or 1024x600, both are common wide resolutions.

I'm surprised that the LCD panels had compatible connectors!

It's most likely not a resolution problem.

It's most likely a controller problem. The controller is setup to run the timings of the scren that was in there.

The screen you replaced it with probably has similar timings but slightly different causing a horizontal shift.

If that is the problem it can't be fixed.

If it's a simple resolution problem just setting the proper resolution will fix it.
