Flexibility of 12V line

I know that the 3.3V line is very sensitive, especially in the older revisions of the N64. However, I also know that the 12V line goes into a 7805. What I am wondering is, how flexible is this line? Could I give it anywhere from 5V - 12V, or is the minimum like 8V?

If the minimum was 8v, then whats with all the 7.2v batteries I've been using?

I beleive that the lowest it goes is 6v, but most people use 7.2v or 7.5v because most screens take that. Also, I believe the highest it goes is 35v, if I remember correctly.

I don't recall if the 7805 is rated for 35V or 36V, but either way, it is considerably higher than the 12V listed.

Okay, thanks guys, I couldn't find anywhere a realistic upper and lower bound, so I thought I would quickly ask.

The 12v line is actually just the input to an onboard 78m05 LDO regulator. I believe it only powers the video DAC. You could always put straight regulated 5v to its output, or put 7-35v to the input.
