I went with the ZN40 case with 6 AAA 2500mAh NiMH batteries. I didn't go with built in batteries to try and make it simpler but ended up just making it really hard to make the end caps for my battery holders. I went with the whole controller under the screen to simplify things instead of 2 parts on the sides of the screen like others do. The screen also used 4 LEDs. I only had a kinda crappy soldering iron and a cheap solder sucker so i didn't move the cart slot. On the bright side it is kind of like a kick stand when playing 2 players and when playing with one it actually is perfect for resting on your lap so it makes the portable feel really light.
A little taste of the insides
These shoulder buttons were not fun to put in because i forgot about them when i was cutting up the controller and had to remake the top half of the shell of the case. This also made it hard to keep the circuit part of the triggers in place. The cart holder is actually the same holder used in the mini snes but it's upside down. After a little cutting the cart fits perfectly.
The dreaded velcro caps for the batteries (had to redo these mofos 3 times). The velcro is a 2 lb per sq inch stuff i got at Menard's (it was the strongest i could find). I was going to go with the twisty bottoms but ended up being too hard to make a solid connection. My poor planning in the first place made me put the batteries on the outside in pcv pipe so i couldn't make the batteries like ben did it. You can also see I had to move the screws because the speakers HAD to go down at the bottom (poor planning again).

These two switches control the power and the controllers. If only one player you can use the built-in controller but if you have two you can both play with external ones. I needed a switch for the controllers because the controllers used clocks. If i just soldered the two sets of wires together i would get 2 different outputs at the same time. This switch allows me to chose with controllers i'm using.
If i was to redo this again i would make the batteries built in. I don't have a pic when i was making it but without the pvc on the sides for the batteries the portable looked almost identical to the original gameboy. I would have also when without the LED mod because the screen is too dark to play in a car during the day. I tried to jump that one part it said to in the book but made my output really fuzzy and choppy for some reason.
