After searching long and hard, and soldering my fingers to various IC's and bits of protoboard, I've found the near-mythical Audio IC on the PAL SNES.
It's no secret where it is on the Mini Snes, the portabalisers choice, but for those of use in europe, it's not quite so easy. Easier to get a PAL SNES and do a bit of chopping. However, the audio seems to be the first thing that disappears should something go wrong with the system, and without anybody knowing what or where the Audio IC is, it's been almost impossible to fix.
The IC you're looking for is shown below; you're looking at the top-right of the SNES motherboard; excuse the terrible photography, I only had my phone, and a lamp to provide lighting.
The IC in the red box is in the top-right of the motherboard, and is a D6376 2-channel Digital to Analog Converter, made by NEC. Not quite the chip that generates the audio, or whatever, but hey, it outputs it! =D
