dual controller problem

So im SOOO close to having my portable done and i run into this problem. In my portable i have both controller jacks so if there are two players we can both play with a regular controller, there is also the controller built into my portable. I have just soldered together the 1st player jack and the on-system controller in parallel hoping that when you plug in the controller both the built in controller and the external controller will work.
When i turn my system on the built in controller works perfectly but when i plug in a controller into player 1 jack both controllers stop working (built in and external). Anyone have any idea why this is happening? Right now im going to try and see if im loosing voltage when i plug in my other controler

UPDATE

i have just found out the pressing BOTH of the buttons will make A and B work but this didnt work with start and select

the second player works fine because it only has that one connection on it. Im pretty sure the only keys that work with pressing them at the same time are the ABYZ, the start select dpad has no effect when i press the same key at the same time.

Is there another way i could connect the built in controller or any other suggestions?

UPDATE

it feels like im talking to myself right now but o well

after doing a little research (should have started with that) i have found that the controller is driven my latches and clocks (should have known that because there are only like 5 wires for 12 buttons), so my idea of connecting the 2 in parallel will not work.

im now going to try just running the white wire (5+) through a slider switch, if this doesnt work the red one should work.

i think im going to have to try in the morning tho, will update tomorrow

that will fix it

either the 5 volt or ground you could try

so i slept in about an hour longer than i wanted too so didnt get much work done, and what i did get done really makes no sense. I tried doing the switch on the white and realized for some reason it didnt help my problem and the built in controller was actually working without it even connected. Next i tried the red and didnt help for some reason.

I only had 30 min to work on it and now have to go to work so i will get back to it after.

So i figured out that it was a solder problem that was messing with me. So i ended up using a switch to switch between the red wires (wire that gives the signal to which button you are pressing). Now EVERYTHING WORKS, put everything together, played for like 20 minutes before ... my problem part failed again.

I have been having problems with how to close the battery compartment (using pvc pipes for the batteries to fit in). Tried for like a weekend to use a twisty bottom but couldnt get it to work so went with some heavy duty velcro. I ended up not keeping enough surface area for the vecro to get a good connection so i must replace it now. ONE more day and she should be done.
