confused about the 3.3v line

ok so ive been reading up on how to get the 2 power inputs for the N64 and from what ive read it seems i need a 7.5v and a 3.3v, correct? ive seen that many people use the TI sample trick but i was wondering why you need the full board and why not just a simple regulator, just as on the SNES dropping it from 7.5 to 5v with a 7805. and say i dont want to use a TI board, where is a good place to get a proper regulator? the sticky links are broken for most of the N64 help and using Search i didnt really turn up anything useful. thanks for your help

You are right in saying you need 7.5V (that line is regulated so it can take more but it is a linear regulator so 7.5V will be best). The reason most people use the TI card for the 3.3V line is that it is efficient (it is a switchmode regulator which is more efficient than the linear regulators like the 7805) and it can supply more than 1A which is something other regulators can't lay a claim to. If you use a 78033(is there such a thing?) then it will probably have a ceiling current of 1A which the nintendo with a jumper pack can do according to some sources and can't according to others.

I used two dimension engineering DE SW033 in parallel but I used the expansion pack. You might be able to use one by itself.

If you want to make your own then go for it. There are switchmode regulator ICs out there much like a 7805 in design. Still 3 legs and a T0 220 package.
