Why does a SNES turn yellow?

Includes but not limited to: SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Gear and I guess the Virtual Boy.

Since ... different batches of plastics had ... different aging results ... then there must have been a difference of additives between them. Perhaps in one of the production runs of plastic, they didn't get the catalyst or flame retardant mixture quite right and more residues were left over in the top half's plastic batch, thus causing it to degrade more rapidly over time. And by the time Nintendo produced the later runs of Super Nintendos, they had perfected the manufacturing process of their plastic, meaning that those later models aren't as susceptible to oxidation as the earlier models are."

well that was from your friends hands, consoles usually are only touched when inderting a game, Handhelds are well, held all the time.

I feel bad for yellow sneses. I found one a year or so ago at goodwill all yellowed, dirty and lonely so I had to rescue it.

Suprisingly, it worked better than the minty one I currently had at the time. What I'd like to do is fit it in a super famicom/pal snes shell.

I got my SNES for $20 bucks at a flea market a year ago. All the hook ups, and Super Mario allstars came with it. Suprising it wasn't yellow, and still isn't.

I think they turn yellow for the same reason old Macs yellowed: the plastic reacted with UV light.

@ GoldenfrankO: About 10 bucks.
