LARP

It stands for "Live Action Role Playing". Ever played D&D, or been involved in a Role Playing forum? Same thing, basically. Only you cosplay your characters in a live environment. In my case, I'm setting up to do one with a good friend of mine, in my back yard, with a video camera (It'll go on YouTube after everything is done). A Japanese-stylized fight scene. If all goes well, I'll be seeing my friend tomarrow, and she and I will be writing our "lines", and practicing the fight-choreography.

I was just curious as to how many people here at forums.benheck have participated in a LARP. I'm also curious as to how many people have no idea what I'm on about.

Not my cup of tea, but if that is what gets the ladies, then by all means have your Japanese fight scene!

eeeeeeh. not a fan, myself. me acting is a really horrible sight. i even fail at playing dnd; i have a big problem distinguishing ooc and in-char. it's like a dnd learning disability. i had to stop playing to cease my embarrassment.

Heheh... Yeah... I just do it for the fun. Besides, I've never attended an official LARP event. Theres a lot of work that goes into some of the props used, and some of the people who attend are less than trustworthy. For example; A friend of mine went to an official LARP Cosplaying his dragon hybrid character. At the end of a battle, the two guys he was in it with ripped his mask and staff to shreds just because they didn't like dragons. He spent weeks making those items. Before I heard about this, I was going to join an official LARP event... But now I refuse to.

The fight scene is just something that sounded like fun. I have a short list of stuff I need to buy before we can actually produce it, though. Like a wig, black body paint, clothing and fake blood. You know. The basics for creating a character.

Ouch. Well, at least you played it. I haven't been able to get around to it... Not to mention G. Gygax died. I doubt it'll be the same now. Sucks, too. They just recently started work on the new version. You might want to try joining a RPForum. Its just story writing. Just you work with another person. Sometimes several. This is where my strengths are. I just want to try LARPing for a more public audiance. Hell, maybe somebody (*cough*Steven Spielberg*choke*) will see it and like how I act. *shrug*. With the power of the internet, it could happen.

I dunno, if it's choreographed is it really LARP? I thought LARP was just like D&D where everything was spontaneous and based on a dice roll?

Also, as far as Gary Gygax dying, from what I read he hadn't been working on D&D for years, he moved on to other projects. So already it hasn't been the original thing, so I don't see what him dying has to do with you not playing it.

Sounds a little like Vampire the Mascaraed, where very often the players would dress the part of their character when they played. And I have to agree with Black Six, most RPG is not planned out. You can design a mission/quest/objective but what goes on during it or even if it is successful is determined by dice roll and player choices.

If you plan it out, it's boring.

The reason this is going to be choreographed, is because its not a normal LARP. Obviously, because LARPs aren't normally videotaped. Freestyling is not a good idea when there is a camera involved.

This is meant to give the feel that your watching a tv show, or short movie. Thus: Lines, and choreography.

And technically, whether its choreographed or not doesn't effect if its a LARP or not. Your role playing. Its live action. Thats what makes it a LARP. The rest of the boundaries (if any) are up to you.

And also; LARP's don't use dice....usually. There is the rare person who attempts to bring the actual D&D game to life. Very few...very very few people, however.

Don't get me wrong, I do that too. It's just I don't have to dress up as an elvin warlord with a +9 powersword and a katana from the mountains of Dragnord to do it.

I know this may be a controversial statement, but personally, I think stuff like this just gives a bad name to nerddom in general.
