Radica GOAC CHIP Exposed!! with pictures

Post by sam_thornley »

So here's the story...I had dead radica in my parts bin that became came a victim to a failed cart slot attempt. (broken tracks) I placed it in there when because I thought that id be able to bring it back from the dead but it just wasn't worth it as most of the tracks where ripped right off the board. Before just throwing it away I thought maybe I'd snap it in half with the pliers (as you do...) but it just snapped one end of the board and a crack appeared across the GOAC. Then I thought may be I could expose the chip to see what it looks like. So I bent the whole board from the chip side and half of the resin blob, flicked off revealing the GOAC silicone die. I was then able to remove the rest of the resin and expose the whole chip. I was surprised that I didn't break the chip or anything, and how small the thing is. I mean a full genesis/megadrive on something that small... I managed to take a few pictures with my cheapo webcam by rotating the focusable lens to a point where it nearly fell out. I'v had a look at the chip under my 100x mirco scope. I can see all the conections and stuff but what I need is one off them Intel usb micro scopes to take some proper die pictures. In one off the corners of the chip under my micro scope, is some writing but I can't really make out what it says. With a 200x scope id be able to see it properly. Something like “GEN SEGA RAD1718â€

Do you have any of the Mask ROMs around?

I am trying to figure out if they made all the Roms as a single chip and use the external solder jumpers to choose the games. http://forums.benheck.com/viewtopic.php?t=23216 If you have different jumpers than mine go ahead and post a picture (I looked on your Gameblock pictures, but your Mask rom PCB looks a little different, and there wasn't enough detail to make out the settings)

Very nice pictures btw, and wow, most of that chip is memory! (I suppose it is still like that today :) )
