What are these slides please?? Are they useful??

I have seen these on a couple of controllers I opened up a while back, including a GameCube controller (Logic 3 one) I just opened up (I want to get a GameCube joystick working on a third party N64 controller).

There is a nice D-pad and joystick, both on their own daughter boards in their own pots.


The slides in the pic below slide back and forth, and are normally located either side of the unevenly balanced motor (rumble motor) - removed, although these slides are not exposed to the outside of the case for the player to adjust.




My questions are these:

1) Is it a pedometer (looks like one perhaps)?

2) Anyone know what these slides can be used for, and more importantly, any ideas of how to wire them up? I am wondering if they are suitable to adjust the volume and contrast controls on the PSone screen instead of buttons?

3) What function do they have on a controller?

what other controllers have you seen these in. they mightve been the pots for the L and R triggers. why dont you connect the controller up and see what they do?

also, its potentiometer, not pedometer. a pedometer counts your footsteps when walking

Thinking about it, the others I saw were in N64 controllers. They aren't connected to the LS and RS - one of these are connected to the pink and white wires on the top left in the pic.

I can't connect the controller up to see what it does - as you see in the pic, wires have been severed and it is all in bits!

in a gamecube controller they are potentiometers for the analog shoulder buttons

If you have a multimeter, you could set it up to measure resistance and see what values it has.

They're probably pots for the shoulder buttons.

I presume they aren't spring-loaded?

seen them in the analog triggers on GC controllers. Potentiometers they are so called.

Yes, the slide pots on a GC controller are for the L and R buttons. I'm never seen that design, but I can tell you that the pots themselves are NOT spring loaded. The L and R buttons probably have their own spring loaded mechanism built-in to their mounts.

Slide pots are exactly like rotary log pots, except that move in a linear direction and not a rotational direction. They're wired up the same way. The middle terminal is the wiper, the outer terminals are the two ends of the resistor.

The PSOne controls are completely digital. They don't even use an external digital pot chip; everything's built-in. So, you would probably need to program yourself a microcontroller to use an analog pot for those controls.
