Being For the Benefit of RF Switches

Do you have a technical question that doesn't really fit a specific console? Want some general info on electronics, hacking, making cookies, etc? Here's the place to ask! Go nuts.

Being For the Benefit of RF Switches

Post by drjayphd »

While on one of my thrifting runs, I snagged a PS/DC/N64 RF switch. All three cables go into the same box, one output. So, upon looking at this hack, I figure it's possible to re-wire the box so that it just outputs bog-standard A/V, yes? Just bypass the RF board?

I would want it to output stereo, though, so in theory, if all three draw +5v from their respective consoles to power the RF switch, I could just recycle that wire for the other audio channel, correct?

Anyway, that adapter is an RF modulator. It reads composite data and audio from the DC and modulates it. What he did was to tap the audio and video data right from the DC cable. He could practically have thrown away the modulator circuit and just connected the wires directly to each other.
There's no wire for the right audio channel in that cable. (At least not the one shown in that mod guide)
As for re-using the +5 V wire... You can't do that unless you mod the console internally. Which is a hard thing to do since you need to cut the cupper trace for +5 V and connect the right audio channel to that place. If you're going to mod the console internally you can just as well drill holes and put RCA jacks in there.

Huh? I didn't mean modding the console. I meant cracking open the connector from the RF switch and swapping where that wire's attached.

Although I just bought another one (PS/GC/Xbox), and looking at the connectors, the GameCube and PlayStation ones don't even have all the pins in the connectors... auuuuugh.
