So what's this about PSX's overheating?

While perusing the videogamecritic.net console reviews, I read that early PSX consoles had problems overheating during extended play, causing increased loadtimes, slower gameplay, and eventually freezing altogether. Has this ever been verified by a reputable source besides some kids that put their PSX on a shag carpet and blocked the vents? If so, which PSX systems suffer from said overheating (serial/model #'s in other words). There is a decent condition used PSX at my local play in trade for only $15 with 1 controller (non-dualshock,hella oldschool, I like it) and the A/V hookups and AC adapter. Even though I have the backwards compatibility from my PS2, it would still be cool just to have a PSX around anyway, especially since I have a gameshark someone gave me and I can only use it on a real PSX (I don't even think it will work on a PSOne). Also, for $15, that's hardly a price to complain about, its worth that much just for the trippy audio CD graphic representation feature. So, if anyone knows anything more about this, let me know.

edit: oh yeah, and what about PSX's scratching games, any truth to that rumor either?

I have never played much with it, but my PSX didn't scratch any games. If you have a PSOne action replay that is being plugged in the back, it won't work with the PSX, no.

No, I have a PSX gameshark, and its the kind that works with that big I/O port on the back, which I'm pretty sure PSOne doesn't have.

I'm confused, I always thought the PSX was short for the PSOne (the SMALL ps)

Yeah, PSX/PS1 is the big one, and PSOne is a refrence to the small one.

I haven't experienced any overheating, you should be fine as long as you don't block the fans.

fans? I thought the PSX was cooled by ambient air?

The only thing I've heard was that it wasn't adequitly vented. Which lead to it to some of them overheating.

which I've heard for almost every system ever made, and usually its because people put them on carpet and the vents are primarily on the bottom. I guess I'll put this in the "problems you have if you have no idea what you're doing" pile since no one here seems to have a huge problem with overheating.

I forgot which gaming mag it was. I think it was Playstation Mag but as I said I forgot. But ut what ever mag it was, It said the PSX overheats because it's not adequitly vented.

I never personally had no problems with our psx. even though we had some serious gt2 sessions going, this stuff usually goes with every console.

Make sure that Playstation your gonna get has the Parrellel port if you really want to use the Gameshark, because the very last PS1 Phat had the Parrellel port removed (SCPH-9001)

Yeah the older the model of PS1, the more problems it will have with heat, plus the older they are, the most likely your gonna have CD reading problems, mainly cause they had all plastic laser assembly which caused wear on the sleds causing the Laser to be crooked and no be able to read the disc properly.

But the older PS1s had a lot better Audio CD playback as you can see in the thread I just made.
