Mini/Tiny XP (128MB Slim Version)

Post by HotDog-Cart »

Hey guys. Im in a bit of a pickle here.

Im running vista, and need to do an ISU. (Like an individual assignment for school thats worth 20% of my mark. Thats a lot.)

Its for my coding class, and we do java. Heres the problem. My teacher only wants us using 'Ready to Program: Java', to do out java assignment on.

Guess what? That program doesnt work with Vista. Ive tried downloading it, running it off the original CD, running it off a burnt CD and my computer just locks up. My freinds tried it on his vista, and gets the same problem.

I desperatly need Mini/Tiny XP (128mb Slimmed Version), as I need to do this assignment and its due in like 10 days. (Its big, Most people have been doing it for a week and arent even close to being done.

Ive tried torrentz (I know, shush.) but they dont work, they either take WAY to long and or dont even download. (not to mention that my ISP blocks torrents, by only allowing a certain ammount of kb or go to the torrents. So my torrent max is like 1/kbs. VBMaster can explain this to you more. As he knows about ISP blocks.)

I really need the 128mb slimmed version, so I can throw it on my 1gb thumbdrive and have a portable XP, with all my programming documents.

Can one of you guys "hook" me up with a download (A direct download, so that I can download at like 300kbps) of Mini/Tiny XP (128mb Slimmed Version)?

I'd really appreciate it, and it would stop me from failing this class. (Its my favorite class, and if I pass I can go into advance programming next year!)

No pirating allowed here, you should know that by now.
Address the issue with you're teacher, they'll either have to give you an alternative, provide software for you, or give you access to a computer with the necessary software to complete the project.

Didnt know it was illegal, just thought it was hard to find.
Crap man. Ive talked to the teacher. She cant provide a PC, considering its a HOME assignment, and theres no laptops. Also, she wants us to only use that program. No extentions either. Im quite screwed here and, no alternatives. Its part of the exam. :(

Use another program? If theres no way for her to tell the difference, she won't even have a clue.

Shes been a java teacher for a number of years. I'd rather not try, as in big font (size 18, I think.) on the page it says "Please do NOT use a different program. You can get advice from people on the internet but you MUST source the info. If you do NOT source the info, you will get ZERO."

(Yes, shes a mean teacher. Shes used to be in the military, but I cant complain as her daughter is pretty good looking.)

Install a copy of XP on a virtual machine and run it on there. (You can use any old XP install disc, you said it's due in a bit over a week, and an XP install gives you 30 days to play with it before it's lights out.) Depending on how old the program is, 98 might work too.

Thanks bic, theres just 2 problems. I need it to be under 1gb. As we need to bring it into class and such, and I would like to have a portableXp that I can bring basically anywhere.

Other problem is, all my PC's are running Vista. (My stepdad HAD to upgrade....-_-), and the only PC that runs XP is my brothers laptop and he wont let me use it. And it never came with a disc when he bought it from the store. (I guess they pre-installed XP on it, and ddint supply the disc.)

So yea... Back to square one. :'(

(Yet, I'll keep the VPC idea in mind for the furture. :3, Its now bookmarked. yey)

Assuming your school's computers have that program installed and you can put its documents on a thumbdrive and its documents are under a gig, why? And even if you virtualize, you could use Bochs and run 98 on it. (I've installed 98 on a 500 MB hard drive partition before. It does work.)

You could build a BartPE boot disc / thumbdrive, but I'm not very familiar with that process.

Alright I uhh.. aquired TinyXp. (Im not saying where or how, so dont PM me.)

How would I go to making this run on my 1gb stick? Like I dont want to just drag the .exe of the installation onto the Stick, I actually want the stick to act as a HDD that runs the TinyXp. (Like, Think of the stick as an external HDD. I want that external HDD to run the TinyXp, so I can bring it anywhere and boot it up without having to install each time.)

I tried making a custom XP install CD that can install to USB devices. It's a real pain and involves unpacking and editing config files in the cabinet archives inside the ISO. (I think it was moving the point where the installer loads USB mass storage drivers.) It didn't work after many failed attempts. (Thank [diety] for CD-RW. 8)) Unless the person who put together TinyXP knew how to do that and patched the files (probably not, it's just an nLite disc), you will have to do that yourself.

Like I said, BartPE can be installed to a USB drive, but I don't know much about it. (You probably have to export the registry settings your program makes and put them in the PEbuilder directory tree somewhere.) Even then you won't get a complete copy of XP, it's more of an operating environment.

That 'installer' is probably a standalone zip archive or something, since Tiny XP is a chopped up bootleg install CD. Make sure you scan that file; viruses love to hide in them.

You also have to make sure whatever computers you're working on support USB booting.

Just talk to the teacher. I'm sure there's something she can do; my Java teacher last year had OS disks up the wazoo. There were a number of Robotics tools we used that only ran on Windows 2000, he let us install the OS at home due to our need.

You could also just buy TinyXP or XPLite, they're fairly cheap for what they do. And just because something downloads slowly, that doesn't mean it won't download, FYI. To me, this sounds like a problem with the teacher, who should be more than willing to accommodate her students; if not, she doesn't deserve the job he's got! :P

Also, piracy is bad, and the official position of the forum is not to condone it. But if you found it, then it will download. Just get it, for Pete's sake! :D

Isnt any java IDE just basically a frontend for the compiler provided by Sun?

I personally just use notepad (with code highlighting) and the command line. I dont like fancy crap. So three points:

1) since all 'java programs' use the same core compiler, and therefore have the same syntax, how would anyone know what environment you programmed it in (assuming you are only handing in source)?

2) So you arent allowed to use 'other programs'... then just use the command like like I said. it isnt another program - its no program. ;)

3) As far as I know, if you have an assignment that requires software, the school has to provide a computer to do it on. Ive never seen an exception to this rule, schools always have public computers with all kinds of software on them. I have a feeling they do, and you are just to stubborn to do this work at school (dont worry, me too). In that case, maybe you should just stop messing around with pirating windows at this point and do it at school.

If they seriously dont provide you a computer to run this "mandatory" software on, then you have a pretty good case for not doing it. If your parents are at all reasonable you should be able to get them to discuss this with the teacher.

Xinox JCreator works in Vista. I personally use the Professional version of that IDE on XP.
