Contributions to keep BenHeck forum up? Vote...

Post by bacteria »

The "hardcore" members here, like me, love this site; as sad as we are! There is no other site around specialising in this type of modding (that I have found anyway).

Running a site as a hobby is fine, but supporting a server to keep a popular forum going an paying for it by yourself I am sure gets a bit expensive.

My thoughts are this: if members contributed say, $1 USD to BenHeck a month (or when they can, every so often, whenever), it wouldn't take many members a month on average to fund the forum to have a permanent and fast server, and keep it running for all.

In return for a contribution (let's face it, $1 is nothing), I am sure either the mods could tag a star against the member title, or change their title to a different colour, or some form or recognition when the member posts that they are "supporting the site"? (incentive)

I think this $1 is reasonable, those who don't contribute, no problem, those without PayPal could pay other means (or not at all); my thoughts are that out of the membership there are probably 100-200 regular posters here; if only 15% of them paid each month (on average), that would surely pay for the service (ie a better one)??

The cost of modding is quite a bit, so $1 a month is not an issue if it makes the difference of having this site or not having it; or having a slow service and a fast one. Agree??

I'm in, if others are - what's your views (serious posting please, this is a vote)? Ben - what does it cost per month? Do you agree with the suggestion? Would this contribution make a viable difference??

I would be more than willing to donate a $1 a month.

Well, the site's hosted on ipowerweb, according to DomainTools. The only hosting plan they list on their website is a "business pro" plan with 6,000 GB of bandwidth per month, 600 GB of storage space, and a whole bunch of other stuff for $8 a month. Unless we can find another host, the only other option from them is a dedicated server, which starts at $130 a month, which actually have a lot less drive space (80 gb) and far less monthly bandwidth (500 gb per month), and they're all sold out as of this writing.

They only offer the one plan, and a dedicated server costs more and provides less, and (as we've seen in the past) this site can chew through 500 gigs of bandwidth very easily.

The shared host works fine. I think someone else on the same physical box as us was using more system resources than everyone else, which caused the server to slow down. Why it stopped, I don't know. However it was fine for months before that, so I don't see the need to jump for new services yet.

Honestly, how hard is it to go to http://www.best-webhosting-2008.com/ and find a cheap but reliable host? Pick bluehost or something, they've been up for years on that list, and they aren't budging. I would pay 10 bucks right now to see you pay less money, Ben.

Ok, the hosting is cheap, $8 a month is cheap and no issue - I thought it cost more than pocket money. May be worth getting a different host if this is a measure of what level of service to expect from the host, assuming of course all the postings and pics and profiles are able to be transferred to a new host? If they can't, we have to stay as we are...

I am sure the host provider is over selling their service to too many people, standard practice; would explain our recent issues with lack of service.

IF Ben got a better server with more bandwidth I would be willing to throw in a couple of bucks a month.

I say Benjamin should just put out some merchandise. Seriously just make shirts that say "benheck" and we will all buy it. Have fun.

I would not pay anything for this site, truthfully. There's more things out there than a site on the internet.
