iPod MatteBack!

I'm fed up with how my iPod Touch, Nano 1G, and every iPod with a chrome back scratches easier than... well, no, I guess those things scratch the easiest!

Would krylon fusion Satin Black bond well to the back of these devices? I'd like a black-backed iPod.

Isn't Krylon Fusion made for painting plastic? If the backing is made of metal then you'll want to use some other kind of paint. However, without proper preparation, the paint will chip and peel off really easily. Unfortunately, there's no good way to paint metal without it being expensive.

What I've used before on metal instead of paint is the spray on truck bed liner stuff that you can get at Wal-Mart. All you'd need to do would be to scuff up the metal some so that it would stick, then you spray on a coat or two and let it dry. It dries with a kind of rough finish, which I think would be cool for an iPod since it would add some grip for when you're holding it. One can would be enough to do several iPod backs.

I tried to find a link to what I'm talking about but couldn't. If I find one, I'll edit this post and add it.

Krylon Fusion is for plastic, not metal, so the extra price will be wasted. Just get regular Krylon for this job. However, you're going to have to scratch the entire back with fine-grit sandpaper before you paint it, or else the paint won't have anything to hold onto.

Try covering the back with packing tape; if you do it right it looks okay. (Smooth it out with an old credit card or something like that.) I put packing tape over my cell phone's screen and it's fared pretty well so far. DON'T do this to the touch screen!

Once the paint is on, apply a couple of coats of matt clear varnish (make sure it is clear first and doesn't have a colour tinge to it). This will help to prevent the paint lifting or scuffing through use.

Actually, it says on the can that it'll work on metal. The RAM cover on my laptop that I painted is metal, the paint is holding just as good as on the plastic. All I did for prep was wash the parts. Fusion is like that old saying, "you get what you pay for", in that you get out what you put into it. If you want an easy paint job that'll hold up decently, use Krylon Fusion. The corners of my PSP are chipped, but oh well. I think it works better when you use a little more paint, the parts I painted first got a couple more coats than the rest, and it seems to hold up best (I'm not sure if it was more or less than what the can said).

Thats a good idea. I think it would be really cool for laptops.
