AAAGH, cant get NES controller to work on my Famiclone

it has a built in controller, a player1 port and a player2 port, 9 pin. and it came with two crappy controllers.

im trying to make a controller converter cable, so i can plug origional nes controller, 7pin, into the 9pin famiclone port.

i took an NES controller port from an old NES, cut the plug off one of the controllers and wired them together, but it wont work in the player1 port. if i plug it into the player2 port it works fine as player2 controller. this dosent make any sense!
