Well just wanted to vent off some steam and put my point across of how unfriendly the forums seem now. I for one is sick of looking at a post and seeing someone correcting a simple grammar or spelling mistake and having to post to say it, it's just pathetic my spelling and grammar isn't the best in the world but at least its understandable. I just find it silly beyond believe!
I understand if the moderators would complain if someone was talking in txt speak which I only use on msn and my phone.

Also how many members have left, When a member leaves I feel that the forum has lost a lot knowledge which does make me sad but theres always new members with more knowledge. So I'm just putting it out there if you think about what you all say about others this forum could be a lot nicer.
Also "If you haven't got anything nice to say don't say it." Now isn't that something your mother would say.

Sorry to anyone who is always nice and friendly to others.

Hey, I stopped my tirade! But your grammar is actually good. Among the best I've seen. No it's/its confusion, no to/too confusion, and my personal pet peeve, no their/there/they're confusion.
PM me for DS friend codes. PLEASE!

It's/its confusion is a bunch of crap to get worked up over. If you can't tell what they meant just because they did/didn't add an apostrophe where it belongs, you should probably go back to kindergarten. To/too is kind of a meh thing, if its possible to tell what they mean, I don't really care. Their/there/they're is one of the worst, because the whole meaning of the sentence rides upon them being correct. But again, if its easy to understand what they mean, I'm ok with it.
No rule says you have to write like an English major on this site, just good enough that the average person can understand what you mean. Its not that acronyms and that are necessarily bad, but not everyone knows the meanings of each and every one. Plus, the way you write can help convey your intelligence. If someone is constantly making mistakes or using IM/txt speak, I assume they are not intelligent. Though being on the other end of the spectrum (telling everyone you can write better than them) makes me think that you're full of yourself.

Yeah, as long as you can read it, it's fine. I agree that too many people mix up "there", "their", and "they're", but there's nothing you can do about it.

The only thing we don't tolerate is overuse of AIMspeak. It looks childish, is hard to read, and looks like they typed by pounding their forehead on the keyboard. That's pretty much the only thing I can't stand.

@ vskid & bicostp

Thanks, that is pretty much the point I'm trying to put out.

"Being a Grammar nazi" should be a more serious offence. Something worth temp banning. It ties in with spam, I believe. If we sorted out all of the benheck forums, we would probably have around 1000 grammar nazi posts.

SS

EDIT: Search returns 514 posts with the phrase Grammar Nazi in them...

You sound exactly like my World History teacher. Like she told us she hates it's/its confusion, to/too/two confusion, and her personal pet peeve, there/their/they're confusion. :D. I hate bad grammar, but to bring up points exactly like hers is kind of weird :D.

You can easily ignore grammar-correctors.

I always spell-check my posts so as not to look unintelligent. I try not to be a grammar nazi, but when there's just plain stupidity/ignorance, like "I-pod" or when someone uses the word minus instead of the word subtract, I can't help it.

Yes, it is all about levels. At one end you have the perfectly grammatical postings; on the other you get the god-awful txt speak nonsense. There are also lots of shades of grey in between.

The "Grammar Nazis" are the ones who consider themselves clever but look idiots to everyone else by trying to put someone down about petty grammar and spelling errors (I had to cut someone down to size recently about this myself); however it is fully acceptable to critisise those people who only use awful txt speak or have such appauling grammar that it is not possible, or easy to understand, what they are saying. This forum deserves better, and more intelligent postings, than txt speak.

The purpose of communication is to make yourself understood by others. Yes, thehackerinside, your grammar is not great, but can be understood fine. Your message is therefore communicated, so serves its purpose.

With english not being my mother language and all it is kind of easy to tell the difference. Not that I pay any special attention or anything, I just know when to use what. I believe it's because I had to especially learn it (involving a lot of writing), while native speakers learn it by speaking, thus not being able to tell the difference before actually learning to write.

Anyway, yes bad grammar annoys me too, but I keep my mouth shut unless it's really bad (or/and text speech) because being a "grammar nazi" is just obnoxious.

What language do you speak natively? I'm interested.
