owww... got graphite stuck in between my thumb fingernail...

Today I was taking my pencil out of my pocket, and it went inside my fingernail, and broke off. Its really hurting bad and I cant get it out... any suggestions?

how did it get in? is it like "under" it or was it like a perpendicular penetration? for the first case try using something else thin to get it out. Or visit the doctor.

Tweezers. When I was about 10 or so, I got a paint chip shoved under my middle finger's nail while swimming (went over to the wall and didn't have my hand high enough when I tried to grab it). Hurt like a mother, went to the doctor, and they pulled it out with a pair of tweezers. Fingernails are t3h suck when they're hurt.

Pull it STRAIGHT OUT. Otherwise, it'll break. If you can't reach it, clip or cut your nail CAREFULLY.

Fingernails are ALWWAYS t3h suck. What purpose do they even serve?

i had this happen once and didn't know what to do. i ended up bandaging it up, downing a few ibuprofen a day for the next week, and waited until i could pull it out safely.

Benol, try this, attemt to pick somthing up, using your toungue, or some other non-hardened part of your body. Now, notice it flops, there is nothign with which to grab?

Who uses their fingernails to pick up stuff? Besides, fingernails do not make the fingertips rigid. Perhaps they are vestigial claws.

Lego's. The only reason we have fingernails is to take apart 2 of those pesky 1x2 plates that are stuck together. Thats all.

And to help protect your fingertips (and toes, for toenails) from being crushed, though crushing would feel better in some cases.

EDIT: And scratching, too. The next time your head itches, try scratching it without your fingernails. See, it doesn't work, or at least not to the same level that fingernails do.
