How would I make an analog switch, so I can use a D-Pad for analog. Like a Playstation controller..? I need to know for my super secret project

Well analog confuses me, on my analog stick there's 2 wires on top, and 2 on the side, and a wire connecting to the middle of both then leaving.
So would this be right?
1 of the 2 on top is up, the other is down, same on the sides. Then the other wire is the ground?
I've never worked with analog so sorry if this sounds retarded.

If you want to use an analog to control a d-pad, I think you need some sort of analog to digital converter (thats what everyone says on Acidmods). Otherwise you could put a tact under the up, down, left, and right positions (cause the analog has that cone sort of thing that goes down around the sensor thing, so you could place a tact in the right place and it would hit it when you point in that direction). You would want the switch to turn the grounds for the analog or d-pad while the other is in use.

I have an old Playstation steering wheel that can "fake" analog in digital mode. It rapidly switches between on and off, and the switches get more rapid the harder you turn the wheel. (Think of it like a variable turbo button.) Could you replicate this using a timer IC?

Well this was gonna be my super secret project buuuuut... to get help for what I really need I guess I gotta tell ya
I am making the Retro Box
(Mostly spawned from boredness/missing my Genesis)
It's going to be for the Dreamcast, have custom NES, SNES, Genesis, Master System controllers able to hook onto the box, mostly for emulators. I wanted to be able to use digital to control the analog stick to play new games with the pads also.
