Modding a 360 pad - UK based?

Post by Lutzie »

Hi all,

I'm in need of help. I'm a freak who plays games with "legacy" controls. For the unfamiliar of that, take your average FPS with normal controls, and swap around the X axis of both sticks. After attempting, and believe me I've attempted, to try to "re-wire" my brain to use default controls it simply isn't happening. I've played far, far too much GoldenEye and Halo with legacy controls to have my brain work any other way.

The problem is that many developers "forget" (read: can't be arsed to cater for) people like myself who don't use default controls. And then there's the southpaws too.

So I thought, what if I flipped the X axis on the pad itself? The 360 would still read as default settings, but I'd be playing with legacy. This means that games like Prey, Bioshock, Call of Duty etc, will all be accesable to me.

I emailed Ben, and he was kind enough to point me in the direction. But I'll be honest I'm like a fish out of water here; it's far far over my head.

I've found a guy in the US of A who mods them to any configuration you like (Click), and his prices are pretty reasonable. But I'm trying to find someone in the UK who can do it, because I already own the second pad. If I can help it I'd rather not fork out for another. Same for friend who also after the same sort of thing but for southpaw.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for your time,

Lutzie

Well you could always open the controller and turn the stick around and close it back up, that way it would have the same effect.
Meh, I don't post much.

Erm... forgive me if I'm being thick here, but how would turning the stick around swap over the X axis on 2 seperate controllers?

Unless you're being funny.

Xbox360 controllers use potentiometers right?

All you'd have to do is reverse the connection on the side potentiometer, solder the left prong to the right pin, and vice versa, which would make up turn to down, and down to up.

Sorry if thats a little fuzzy, I'm not great at explaining without pictures.

*sigh*

I don't need the controls inverted. I need the left and right on the left and right sticks swapping over.

So that if I push left on the left stick the 360 reads it as me pushing left on the right stick.

So, if you were playing Halo, the right thumbstick would be to move, while the left would be to aim?

Thats a little harder I guess, you'd have to wire the potentiometers on both of the thumbsticks to the pins of the other thumbstick.

Edit, its just the left and right you want switched right.. Just wire the bottom potentiometers of both sticks to the contacts of the other thumbstick

But WRT to my original post, that's a bit above my head.

Edit:

No, that's southpaw.

Legacy is:

Left stick:
Up: Move forward
Down: Move backward
Left: Look left
Right: Look right

Right stick:
Up: Look up
Down: Look down
Left: Strafe left
Right: Strafe right

Its about 10 minutes work, but if you want someone to do it, I'll look around for you.

Thats what the edit was for, I usually use original for all the games, so I don't know a whole lot about the other types.

Cheers. As I say, I've found a guy in the US who will do it, but I'd rather have some on the UK do it, simply cos it's got to be cheaper.

Hi good to read there is someone else out there with the same problem as me . I'm looking for someone to help me in Australia . I too can't believe that programers leave out something as simple as a southpaw option and that nobody has bothered mass producing a left handed controller, I only have one hand (my left) and no right arm below the elbow . I can play any game with the southpaw option but 'making do' with default controls is not possible for me. I am gettin pretty tired of buying games , bringing them home and having to take em straight back... very frustrating. Not feelin sorry for myself , just trying to have the same gaming experience everyone should be able to take for granted. Ahhhhh feel better now ..
