Yup, my dad is friends with a guy whos friends with Orson Scott Card. Me and my brother each got one.

It's a great series, for the most part. Ender's Game is great, Speaker for the Dead (the sequel) is even greater (though it's a completely different experience), Xenocide (the third book) is a bit tedious and nothing spectacular, and Children of the Mind is pretty much mediocre until the last third or so of it, when it really pays off and makes you feel much better about having spent your time reading the first two-thirds of it and Xenocide. As for the Shadow books, a sidequel series, those generally range from good to great throughout.

P. S. - Orson Scott Card gets bonus points for having one of the most bizarrely explained stances on gay marriage that I've ever come across. I don't agree with it, but I tremble in awe at its ability to make me think, "Maybe all that superstring crap wasn't really that complicated."

He's my favorite sci-fi author, and that's one of my favorite books! I loved the rest of the series and didn't find any of it tedious. I read those so fast...

if you want long and tedious but kinda awesome read the nights dawn trilogy by Peter F Hamilton. each book is over a thousand pages (1200 or so seems to be the average) very good books but VERY long! according to wiki the three together total 3689 pages!
