I have attemped one and *gasp* I wear a static bracelet when working on portables. Man it costs what $1 and saves like hundreds in the long run.

But serioulsy, as soon you touch it (unless you wear a ground strap) you could fry it with static.

I relocated the cart connector and replaced both voltage regulators on my N64p and it worked great but then I accidentally crushed one of those little capacitors on the underside of the board so techincally I didn't fry it I just broke it. But I voted yes
