Website Help

Post by Murdok09 »

I am making a website and I was wondering if it is better to make the links from page to page offline, or upload all the pages and link while online. What do you think?

NOTE: I will be using FileZilla to upload the pages if that matters.

What program are you using? I've always done it offline...

What? Do you mean relative links (like /articles/game.htm ) vs absolute links (like http://yoursite.web/articles/game.htm)? Relative links are better, and they work offline.

Please don't tell me you're using FrontPage...

Whats wrong with FrontPage? :P I use FrontPage 2003 and during the school year touch things up with Dreamweaver (cause our school has it on the compys and is cool like that)

I assumed he meant Relative links, and they can be done in FrontPage and offline, because I did do that.

I am using Frontpage, Nvu, and Amaya. What I mean is; should I make all the links for the homepage, sponsors, etc. on my computer then upload all the files to my server, or should I upload the separate pages then make the links. What's better?

Put everything together locally, then upload everything at once. It makes troubleshooting easier.

I have that done, but now I need some forums. I use godaddy for domain and agigforfree for hosting. Where can I get forums? I would like them to be in a subdomain, but I don't know. Are these in a subdomain of benheck.com or are they just in an offsite area?

They're hosted on the main web server here, in a subfolder of the main site. (As of this writing; Ben might change that sometime)

If you want forums, first check to see if you have a database at your disposal. If you do, download something like phpBB, punBB, or Simple Machines forum, upload it, and install it. If your plan doesn't have a database, you'll need to find a free forum host. They're less professional, you have less control, and they usually have ads, but they're free.

I am not sure if I have a database or not, does someone mind checking?

agigforfree.com

Also, what do you recommend; SMF or phpbb?

So what will I do now?

I think I am supposed to upload the entire folder to my database, then go from there?

upload the whole forum into a folder on the webserver/website, then go to the forum, set it up. the forum will usually ask for the database info i believe. just give the info then. after that you can customize.

I got that done, but how do I actually put my site on my host? Do I just upload or what?

yes, just upload to the server. i think that if you use Dreamweaver it would be easier to do, if they allow it that is.
