"Game not supported by this version of Windows"

Post by gamer2 »

I picked up a PC game today for the super low price of $1 at a flea market. I go to install it and it gives me a message like

How do I resolve this error? I was thinking a windows 98 emu, maybe. Got an ideas?

Right click the shortcut, select Properties. Select the Compatibility tab, then set it to Windows 98 compatibility mode. It should work now.

If it doesn't, and you have a copy of 98, download Virtual PC. It doesn't emulate a very high end card but it should get the job done except for intensive 3D stuff. And, since that game looks like it was also released on the SNES, Virtual PC should do just fine.

<s>You don't need a copy of 98. XP can do 98 compatibility mode by itself.</s>

Oh you're on 2000? Hmm... If you have Servcie Pack 4 installed you can probably run Virtual PC, but you'll need a copy of 98 or 95. As far as I know there aren't any 98 emulators.

This might work:

I was thinking about getting ReactOS, how's it run as far as memory usage, etc.?

gamer2, if you really need to get it running, open the main exe up in a debugger (OllyDBG) and edit the call to GetVersionA, which is a function that returns the operating system. You can send it over to me if you want me to take a look at it.

I got it working thanks to Bic. Now to update the game from version 1.00 to something a little less buggy.
