Packing up.

Post by Felino »

Question for a friend in need.

What is the best way to physically dammage a laptop, essentially so it is unworkable, in a way that can be seen as normal wear-and-tear?

Like ram failure, hdd failure, you get the gist.

The leptop in question is a iBook G4, is there some software way this could be achived?

I need more information, is he trying to damage his iBook so he can get a replacement under warranty? And if so, what warranty does he have, because Apple isn't very keen on replacing computers that have "wear and tear".

iBook G4's are crappily built, I think. I'm typing on one now. I just wish apple had used a sturdier plastic, or metal. One drop broke the internal chassis of mine, and it's never been the same.

Easiest thing to do would be just drop it. If he really just wants his parents to get him a new laptop, he should just make it look like he's really outdated (by showing them all the things that won't run on it), or else just ask.

maybe you could pull out a stick of RAM and zap it? Just take something you plug into the wall that you don't care about anymore, use its cord, and zap it with 120 volts :)

EDIT: Asked friend, well shall try it, i wonder how macos will react to a dead stick of ram? Which are the power pins, i am sure 330v will puch through nicly.

That's the beauty of it... just put 2 wires on a couple pins, move them around to zap them all over, and you're done. Worst case scenario, you fry it somewhere other than the power source. Or it continues to work and you try frying something else.

Just graze powerful magnets over it, something's bound to screw up then.

Or maybe your friend should just learn to appreciate what he has instead of being spoiled and wasteful and ruining a perfectly working machine that could be put to good use

Maybe you should keep your opinions to yourself. What kind of laptop does he want? I bet he wants a Macbook/Pro

Is there a reason for this? I gave a reason why Felino's friend should not defraud his parents and destroy a machine that could do someone some good. You have given no reason why I should keep my opinions to myself.

I've mentioned neither politics nor religion. My comment was PG. I discussed nothing illegal. I did not post an ad. I suppose someone could interpret my comment as flaming or trolling, but I believe that is a pretty big stretch since my comment was no more flaming than people calling other people's ideas "stupid," which happens on this forum all the time, or telling someone to keep his opinions to himself. As far as I can tell, my comment is in no way in violation of the forum rules.

I mean, heavens forbid someone express an opinion on the "Forum 42" section of the message board, which is specifically zoned for random discussion.
