Really, what is OE firmware?

I'm a noob to the PSP, and I've searched Google to no avail, so please bare with me.

I use to have a PSP, but after I sent it in to Sony they upgraded my 1.5 firmware to 2.7. At the time there were no downgraders, so being the impatient person that I am I just gave it to my Dad and bought a DS. However, now with the 3.5 downgrader out I'm thinking about buying a new PSP, especially since I don't have to worry about getting a TA-082 motherboard.

I've heard about all the OE stuff, but really, what is it? What are the advantages to using it instead of a vanilla 1.5 firmware, and are there any reasons why it shouldn't be used?

The OE firmware allows UMD games that require firmware above 1.5 to be played. It also lets you use the built-in PS1 emulator in 3.03 OE-B and above. It allows you to run all homebrew as if it was 1.5. I'm sure there are other good things about the OE firmwares, but I don't actually have a PSP (yet), so I'm no expert.

Reasons to use: You have FULL Game support upto 3.40. On 1.5, some ISOs or UMDs will not load. You can run your PS1 Games. Just rip them to your PC, and convert them into an EBOOT (Usually about 25-50% the size of the actual PS1 ISO) You also have the official things too, like the PSP Camera support, Web Browser, RSS Feeds, etc. Essentially, OE Firmwares are the exact same as Sony Firmware, with the ability to play any PS1 ISO, any PSP ISO/Game, and all Homebrew.

Reasons not to use: None

No Downsides, having an OE Firmware is a must!

Yeah somebody seriously has to tell me about what firmwares can run emulators and what firmwares can't.

1.5
any OE

Cannot run homebrew:
everything else (without a HEN)

3.40 OE-A is rocking my world. Copying over a legally obtained iso of Star Wars: Lethal Alliance as we speak. And all the emulators own. This is 225USD* well spent.

*PSP (170), case (10), 4GB memory stick (45)

Hey i wonder if i could send my PSP to anyone here and they could homebrew it for me. Like pimp it out with a custom firmware and emulators and all that cool stuff.

How do you guys get the custom themes onto there? Ive seen random flashers and what not. But I never fully understood how to use them.

You first turn off the PSP, and Restart it holding the R Trigger. It will load Recovery Mode and then from the Main Screen in Recovery, Goto Configuration, then Activate USB (Flash0) Then you hook it up to your PC like normal, except now you will see folders on the PSP's 32 MB Flash Chip. Go into the vsh Folder, then go into the Resource Folder. From there, just replace all the old files with the new ones from the theme you downloaded. Simple as pie. DONT FORGET TO BACKUP THE ORIGINAL FILES!

PS: For custom Themes, you need an OE Firmware (3.03 OE-C and above)

What Firmware is your PSP? You have to pay shipping to and back

1.0 - 1.50: $5
1.51 - 2.80: $10
3.03 - 3.10: $12
3.11 - 3.50: $25
3.51+: Not Possible atm

First I have to downgrade (Unless your at 1.0 or 1.50), then upgrade to the OE firmware of your Choice (I will do 3.03 OE-C or 3.40 OE-A) I can also get you some Homebrew, Emulators, and/or pre-load some backups, etc.

Well I'm buying a new PSP tomorrow probably and i know the whole you can tell what firmware it is by looking at the box thing. So what firmware should i be looking out for?

Wait where do you live Harshboy? I don't want to be paying $50 there and back for just a PSP with homebrew.
