hooking a harddrive up to a ps2

how do you hook up a harddrive to the ps2 (fat version) i can handle installing it in the actual location inside the case, but what else do you have to do to the harddrive to ensure it works correctly? how do you format it and the such? i am asking this because i love to play socom 2 and socom 3. i can only play one at a time, with out messing up the others games because the update files are so big, they fill up a whole memory card. i would like to put a harddrive in mine to make it so i could save these update files somewhere beside the memory card.

im not sure if you can use the network adapter and hard drive at the same time, let alone use the hard drive to save normal stuff that youd save to a mem card

I'm not sure if you can use anything other than an official PS2 HDD without a modchip. You must have a network adapter to install the HDD; the network adapter acts as a bridge between the PS2 and the HDD. Kinda weird, but... *shrugs*

To save files normally meant for memory cards, you need a modchip. However, Socom may recognized and utilize the fact that you have a HDD if it detects one, and save the data there instead; I'm not sure. This page lists the HDDs currently known to work with the PS2.
