Best PSP software?

Post by CronoTriggerfan »

I'm getting a PSP this week pre-loaded with Dark_AleX's 3.30OE' custom firmware. I've got all my music and movies lined up, as well as some PSX .img, .bin, and .iso's, and I was wondering what the best software for this setup is. I'm looking for emulation of SNES, Genesis, NeoGeo, and GBA. Any suggestions as to the best options here? Any other cool homebrew apps or games I should know about? And the PSX emulation is built in directly, correct? Thanks!

Yes, I don't know what its like though, as I don't have interest in any PS1 games.
I use snes9xtyl for SNES, gpSP for GBA, NesterJ for NES, Daedalus for N64. They are all good, but as with most homebrew, take some getting used to. File Assistant is good to use if you accidentally put a file in the wrong folder and don't have computer access. Its come in handy many times.

You need to convert the PS1 iso's to eboots with popstation (it's with one of the OE update downloads, I think 3.30OE-A). And for some reason, some ISO's won't work so you need to make a BIN and a CUE.

Like vskid said, snes9xtyl, gpSP, NesterJ, and Daedalus are the best emulators for their respective consoles. And I use MVSPSP for Neo-Geo and DGen for genesis. They're all full-speed (well, 50ish fps for snes) except for daedulus. Daedulus runs mario 64 at around 23 fps, and zelda at about 10-13 fps. But games like banjo kazooie are around 4-5 fps.

Some other stuff I'd reccomend:
-PSPUAE (amiga emulator)
-Rin (gb/gbc emulator)
-pspmsx (msx emulator)
-smashgpsp (port of smashgp, which you've probably played)
-plynx (lynx emulator)
-super mario wars (you've probably played this one too)
-squarez (it's strangely addictive)
-throttlex (the driving game with "awesome" 3d graphics)
-robotorn 3d (the fps with "awesome" 3d graphics)
-dungeons (the other fps with even more awesome 3d graphics)
-iris (the other other fps that uses quake 2 models)
-psplayermt (plays full resolution divx files)
-mmsplus (master system/game gear emulator)
-duke nukem 3d port
-doom port
-quake port
-quake 2 port
-bookr (reads pdf, html, and txt files)
-penguin command (like missle command)
-snakesp (snake with cool vector graphics)
And you might want to update to 3.40OE, the PS1 emulation is supposedly a bit better (no crashing in chrono cross).

So what happened to the PSP being crap?

I still hate Sony, and I must say, getting games onto the PSP is a female of the dog species! If only the GP2x could do PSX fullspeed... :(

Thanks for all the software recommendations! Though I have absolutely no clue how to get my PSX games on the PSP. I looked it up and all I could follow was to use Popstation and something about Hot Shots Golf 2. Anyone care to help a fellow gamer out?

What's so hard about putting games on the psp? It's just drag and drop...

Well, first get the popstation exe and extract it to a folder. Then you have to "obtain" the hot shots golf 2 eboot. You rename that to BASE.PBP and put it in the same folder. Put your disk images in that folder, too. After you have all that together in the same folder, you just open up a command prompt in that folder and run popstation. The syntax is "popstation title gamecode compressionlevel file.iso/bin/img/cue".

The title is what shows up on the xmb and the save data utility. It needs to be in quotes if it's more than one word.
The gamecode is SLUSxxxxx, and it doesn't really matter what you use for that. You'll usually want to make every game have a different code so they don't overwrite each other's save games. But for a multidisk game, you need to use the same code for both so the save can go from one disk to the other.
The compression level is from 0 to 9, nine being the smallest file size.
Then you just put the filename of your image, which can be an iso, bin, img, or cue file.

And if you don't want to have the hot shots icon show up for your games in the xmb, you need to put pic1.png (480*272 background) and icon0.png (144*80 icon) in the folder with everything else.

Or you can just download one of the many GUI's available if you don't like the command prompt. Those pretty much just give you a window with prompts for all the file locations, and some will do stuff like automatically assign the correct game code or give games different game menu and save IDs. Just google "popstation gui" or something.

Hope that helps!

A psp! (i have fw 3.03 OE)
CDRwin
Zinga Burga's popstation
Disc of game you want to rip.

First off: Put PSX game in computer drive.
2. Run CDRwin (downloads at bottom)
3. Choose Extract Disc
4. Decide What you want to name the thing. Example. I named my file syphon filter..since thats what game i chose.
5. Finally click 'Start'.. Depending on how big the game is thats how long it takes.. it shouldn't take that long though
6. After it's done wherever you selected your destination place ( Default is Desktop i believe)
7. Time for making the EBOOT! yay how fun?
8. Open up Zinga's popstation.
9. Click on Browse.
10. Find The BIN file it came with when you ripped it.
11. Chose your output folder.
12. Then select your game where it says 'Select...'
13. Customize if you wish.
14. Finally click Go!
15. This process CAN take a little bit..so find something to do rather then staring at the screen.
16. After thats done look in your output folder you selected. You should have an EBOOT.PBP and KEYS.BIN
17 Place these in ms0:\PSP\GAME\ any folder you want.

Downloads.

ZiNgA BuRgA's awsome popstation thread: http://www.psp-hacks.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=60371

Rock on And Enjoy.. If I forgot something or a deadlink please post or pm..

Thank You Zinga Burga and goldenhawk software.

EDIT: you will not need hotshots bin or anything like that.. thanks to zinga's popstation..it comes with one :)
EDIT2: Use the same game id for multi-disk games. Example i would use the same metal gear ID for BOTH Discs
I use this method with all of my PSX games with no problem.

In 3.30 OE you dont need the illegal Hot Shot Golf Meathod of making PSX backups into PSP EBOOTs.

Just search google for iceTea (I use iceTea 1.3)

It converts your isos of PSP games into EBOOTs, it even compresses them if you choose (And i dont notice any issues with it)

I use 3.03 OE-C, mainly because i'm too lazy to upgrade to 3.40 OE-A and skin the crap out of it

This is all you have to do? Sweet! Though what do you put for the PSX Game ID?
