Opinions on new server speed

Post by benheck »

Hello all. Sorry about the outage yesterday, had to manually reset the server to fix it.

Is it just me or are things slower now, especially the main site? I was promised a "substantial" increase in speed, I am just not seeing it.

Perhaps I have something set wrong since I am the server/domain admin now and I'm not exactly an expert. But Jones helped, and I think it's not fast enough.

Thoughts?

Oh buddy. Its WAY SLOWER than before. Takes up to a minute (sometimes MORE!) to load the main site, and main forum from the site.

Poor Ben and his Server woes.

Have you considered buying your own server?

It seems slower to me. Whether that's because of server load, the webserver itself, php modules, server connection/throttling, etc I don't know though.

I don't see any difference. Not faster not slower.

MUCH, MUCH slower. Long threads and the forum indexes kind of "wipe" down as they're loaded.

Me: Come on I want to read the news page!
Firefox: I know, I know, I'm waiting for the server!
Server: *la dee da dee dum* Oh sorry you wanted something?

Seriously, it's taking well over 20 seconds for each forum page to fully load, and most of the time is spent waiting for the server.

Firefox is slowly dying on me, since it won't cache images or resize Javascript-induced windows properly anymore. I've got to upgrade to FF 2. This just makes matters worse.

Why did the server go nuts yesterday? It was out all afternoon. :( Honestly I don't think the new server plan is great yet.

The forums are much, much slower. Ever since a few days ago I've been doing more waiting than reading!
