Decapitating my computer

So, I was thinking of running my server PC without an attached monitor. Is there a way to use it over the network, like if I want to go in from a low-profile crappy terminal computer and use the server as the functioning pc?

You can do that with Remote Desktop if both machines have XP (or 2000 with the right software).

Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Communications

Ah. Thanks, that just needs the local PC to be setup? Nothing on the remote desktop? Or do I have to find the setting for it on the remote desktop?

You can use telnet, VNC, SSH, or for just file modification, FTP. You can also use a HTTP server admin program.

You will need to set up a user on the remote computer as a remote desktop user if you use remote desktop. (shouldn't this be in technical Q/A?) then you'll need to fill in the appropriate information (computer name, username, password) in remote desktop on the other computer.

I personally prefer to use some form of VNC over remote desktop.

Technically you don't have to make a new user account. I've learned from experience that if you use the remote login with Windows it will just kick the user off, be that user accessing it locally or remotely. Same goes if you're remotely logged-in and someone locally signs in.

I'd have to say, well I don't like it too much, Remote Desktop is the best. Ssh would require more software to allow a windows GUI and that will only complicate things.

I guess I just wasn't being clear, I didn't mean create a new user and make him a remote user, I just meant you would need to add a user to the remote desktop users group.

I still prefer tightVNC or realVNC (or any other VNC) over remote desktop. VNC tends to be more flexible than remote desktop.
